Former boy band member Lance Bass has revealed that he never came out to anyone while he was part of the hit group ‘N Sync.

Bass, 33, spoke about disclosing his sexuality to talk show host Ricki Lake on Wednesday.

“I did think that it would ruin ‘N Sync if I told anyone my ‘deep, dark secret,’” said the performer.

“I didn’t tell a single person when I was with ‘N Sync. I didn’t tell a friend, a family member—nothing like that,” he explained.

“As long as I was with ‘N Sync I didn’t date a guy. I was completely asexual…[but] I knew from 4 years old that I was gay,” Bass added.

He went on to say that coming out had completely changed his life and had in some ways negatively affected his career.

He added, however, that “I’d rather be in a position where I can help other people than be the biggest superstar in the world and pretending I’m straight.”

Bass, along with Justin Timberlake, was a member of ‘N Sync between 1995 and 2002; the group selling over 50 million albums. He came out as gay in a cover story for People magazine in July 2006.
