A still from Madonna’s secretprojectrevolution
Pop star Madonna has announced an online global initiative to promote freedom of expression and personal liberty through art of all kinds.
Art For Freedom, led by Madonna, is designed to fuel free speech and to respond, address and protest persecution around the world.
According to the singer, songwriter and film director, it is an online public art project encouraging the world to express their personal meaning of freedom and revolution, in the form of video, music, poetry, and photography.
Madonna has been a vocal campaigner for free expression and individual freedoms, supporting the LGBT community throughout her career. In recent years she has condemned Russia’s crackdown on LGBT people, backed same-sex marriage rights and has slammed the persecution of artists such as the jailed Pussy Riot.
Public submissions will become part of the Art For Freedom platform: contributors can join the project by uploading original artwork or tagging original posts #artforfreedom.
The initiative will be officially launched on September 24 with the star’s own secretprojectrevolution, a 17-minute film she co-directed with photographer and videographer Steven Klein.
“My goal is to show by the example of secretprojectrevolution my creative commitment to inspire change in the world through artistic expression,” said Madonna on Tuesday. “I hope my film and other submissions to Art For Freedom will be a call-to-action and give people a place to voice their own creative expression to help fight oppression, intolerance and complacency.”
“This film operates on many levels,” added Klein. “It examines our private prisons. It questions what we do, how we do it, and how we treat others. It questions our governments, and our collective thought patterns. Think about it – the power of art can lead to peace.”
The film, plus bonus content, will be distributed for free as a BitTorrent Bundle. Anyone will be able download and unlock the secretprojectrevolution Bundle (bundles.bittorrent.com/madonna-revolution/) from 24 September.
