Patrons at an Australian gay and bisexual club could have been seriously injured after a man placed acid into a lubricant dispenser.
According to ABC News, the man filled the dispenser with hydrochloric acid at the Aarows club in Sydney.
The club is described as “Sydney’s gay and bi social club” and offers “three levels of adult adventure”.
Thankfully, staff members were alerted to the man’s actions because the dispenser was fitted with an alarm due to previous tampering.
Security stopped the 62-year-old before he could escape and he was arrested. He was charged with administering a poison with intent to injure or cause pain and for entering a building with intent, malicious damage.
He has since been released on bail and will appear in court on 20 September. The motive for the attack is still unclear.
Hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive and causes severe burns and blisters when it comes into contact with the skin.
Aarows was the site of a homophobic shooting in 2013. An Islamic extremist and an accomplice tried to kill a 52-year-old patron by shooting him outside the venue. The victim survived the attack.
