Is ‘Pose’ the next great LGBTQ TV series? (Watch)

Advertorial

A trailer has been released for a groundbreaking new American series that’s making waves for the having the largest-ever cast of LGBTQ actors.

Pose, co created by the openly gay Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud) is set in the late 1980s.

It will highlight New York’s LGBTQ underground dance ball scene in which the iconic “vogue” dance style – brought into the mainstream by Madonna – was created. The subculture is noted for celebrating drag and sexual and gender expression and diversity and served as a liberating platform for primarily marginalised LGBTQ people of colour.

The eight-part show has been described as “an uplifting series about the universal quest for identity, family and respect.”

According to Broadway World, Pose features the largest cast of transgender actors in series regular roles and the largest recurring LGBTQ cast ever for a scripted television series. In total the first season will include more than 50 LGBTQ characters, a record on US television.

After a six-month nationwide talent search, five transgender actors have been cast in the show – MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross – who play trans characters.

“The show is about the search for being authentic, about creating opportunities,” Murphy told reporters earlier this year, reported the Hollywood Reporter. “We’re past an era of straight men playing these roles. It’s time to think differently and offer more opportunities to people who want to work. Many of this cast have never been in front of the camera before.”

Pose will also depict the higher echelons of New York society, looking at “the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world.”

Pose will premiere in the US on 3 June on the FX network. Watch the stunning trailer below.
