American actor Garrett Clayton has come out and revealed he’s in a relationship with a man, in a subtle but meaningful way.

The Instagram revelation was almost off-hand, and related to his role in his new movie Reach, playing a teenager contemplating suicide. “When I read the script for Reach, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of,” said Clayton.

“I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and – on top of it all – myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events.”

He added: “These topics – not always easy to discuss – are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person… then it was all worth it.”

Clayton also included a link to the Instagram profile of his boyfriend, Blake Knight. He didn’t reveal how long they’ve been together or if he specifically identifies as gay or bi, or anything else for the matter.

The news was welcomed by the vast majority of his 1.4 million fans who congratulated Clayton for coming out and shared how it had impacted them.

One follower wrote: Thank you so much for sharing this garret. I have always been scared of coming out to my family but you have inspired me to.” Another said: “This took so much courage to post and just further shows how much of an inspiration you are. So much love for you.”

The 27-year-old performer first made a splash starring in Disney’s musical Teen Beach Movie and has gone on to appear in a number of films and television shows.

His most controversial role was in the James Franco produced film King Cobra, playing the real life gay adult film star Brent Corrigan. That film told the story of how Corrigan was at the center of a murder case involving competing producers.

Welcome to the family, Garrett Clayton!

With the release of my new movie REACH coming up, I thought it was important to explain why I took on this project in the first place. REACH deals with some very serious and timely topics that have affected me personally, and have likely influenced many of your lives as well. (I also prefer to share things that are particularly important for me here on my IG) instead of in some random magazine or online article – because you are the ones that have been rooting for me and following me on my professional and personal journey in life. When I read the script for REACH, I immediately knew it was a film I had to be a part of. I have personally dealt with suicide within my own family, intense bullying in high school, and – on top of it all – myself and the man I’ve been in a relationship with for a long time (@hrhblakeknight) have both experienced shootings within our hometown school systems, and have witnessed the heartache that takes place in affected communities after such tragic events. These topics – not always easy to discuss- are all close to my heart, and, knowing how serious they are, I wanted to share this with you all. This film has come from the perspectives of people who care deeply about these issues, and if watching it helps even one person… then it was all worth it. ??
