RuPaul’s Drag Race reveals first trans man contestant

Advertorial

The cast of the 13th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been revealed and it boasts a first for the popular show.

After winning six Emmy Awards this year and solidifying itself as the most awarded reality competition show in history, the highly anticipated new season is bringing together thirteen fabulous queens as they vie for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” and a cash prize of $100,000.

“Competing safely and fiercely, our 13 queens proved that it takes more than a global pandemic to keep a good queen down,” said Executive Producer and five-time Emmy Award-winning host, RuPaul.

The series, which premieres on New Year’s Day in the US, will feature the first transgender man to take part in RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“I need to be the first trans winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, period,” said Gottmik, a celebrity makeup artist from Los Angeles, in his promotional video.

“It means so much for me to be on the show right now, especially being a trans guy going in, a feminine perspective of a trans guy. The trans movement is getting so big, so powerful, so strong,” he said.

The show has included some trans women contestants in the past, such as Peppermint, the runner-up in season 9.

In 2018, RuPaul was criticised for commenting that they would “probably not” accept a transgender contestant who had already transitioned on the show. In response to the backlash that followed, the drag star went on to apologise and stated that “the trans community are heroes of our shared LGBTQ movement.”

The thirteen RuPaul’s Drag Race season 13 queens are:

All hail Chicago’s ice queen. With a career as a professional figure skater, much of Denali’s unique drag incorporates ice skating and acrobatic elements. Denali is used to competing, but now at the Olympics of Drag, she is ready to break the ice.
