Specialised HIV doctor services offered to MSM in Joburg

The Engage Men’s Health clinic in Joburg says its specialist HIV doctor can manage more complex cases

While most people living with HIV experience relatively uncomplicated treatment, some face more difficulty, including the possibility of initial “first-line” treatment failure, or side effects that aren’t tolerated.

It’s in that context that the Engage Men’s Health (EMH) clinic in Johannesburg now offers the services of an internationally recognised specialist HIV doctor, in addition to its other existing high-quality free services to gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM).

As of 6 December, Dr Mervyn John Tyrer will advise and treat EMH clients every first week of the month at the Melville clinic to provide an even higher standard of care.

Dr Tyrer has worked in HIV Medicine since 1991 and is considered a key opinion leader in the field both by colleagues in HIV care and by the pharmaceutical industry in the UK and internationally.

His services at EMH will include moving clients experiencing first-line treatment failure onto second or third-line treatment options and managing complications as required. He will also assist with STI treatment, minor procedures and other more complex sexual health issues and concerns faced by clients.

Engage Men’s Health is a project of OUT LGBT Well-being and is funded by USAID through PEPFAR. In addition to its Johannesburg site, it also offers HIV and sexual health services in Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City.

“The new specialist services at our Johannesburg clinic reflect OUT and EMH’s commitment to providing innovative and excellent care to our clients,” says OUT Director Dawie Nel. “We thank Dr Tyrer for offering his unique experience and skills to our clients, many of whom are marginalised and often experience health care discrimination, stigma and even homelessness.”

While these new services are available at no charge to all clients, EMH urges those who are on medical aid and can afford to pay to consider doing so. This will help further support the work and services provided by EMH.

To make an appointment to see Dr Tyrer at the EMH clinic in Melville, located at the 27 Boxes centre, please WhatsApp or call 082 607 1686.
