Cape Town is continuing to make waves as a queer travel hotspot after being named Best LGBTQ+ City Destination at the 2026 Spartacus Travel Awards in Berlin. The recognition comes just days after the city concluded its annual Pride celebrations.
The honour was presented during a ceremony held alongside the global travel trade show ITB Berlin, with Cape Town Tourism’s Chief Marketing Officer, Briony Brookes, accepting the award at the Orania.Berlin hotel.
The Spartacus Travel Awards are presented by the publishers of the Spartacus Gay Travel Index and recognise destinations around the world that promote equality, diversity, and inclusive travel experiences.
Recognition for an Inclusive Destination
Brookes said the award reflects the unique atmosphere that makes Cape Town a welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travellers.
“Cape Town is a city where people can genuinely be themselves. From our vibrant queer community and inclusive spaces to the excitement of our neighbourhoods, beaches, and nightlife, this award honours the spirit of openness that locals and visitors experience here every day.”
She added that the recognition highlights South Africa’s longstanding commitment to equality.
“South Africa was the first country in Africa to enshrine protections for sexual orientation in its Constitution, and Cape Town proudly continues that legacy. Visitors don’t just come for the scenery, they come for the sense of freedom, creativity, and connection they experience here.”

Building Toward WorldPride 2028
City officials say the award reinforces Cape Town’s growing reputation as a leading LGBTQ+ travel destination, and follows the city being named the host of WorldPride in 2028.
Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, James Vos, described the honour as a significant milestone for the city, particularly after the city was named the host of WorldPride in 2028.
“This is a proud achievement for Cape Town and a powerful reminder of what makes our city special – diversity, openness, and a spirit of inclusion. As we prepare to host WorldPride 2028, it is more vital than ever that we continue creating a destination where LGBTQ+ travellers feel celebrated, safe, and inspired to explore all that Cape Town has to offer.”
Evan Tsouroulis, Cape Town Pride’s Marketing, Sponsorship and Parade Coordinator, told MambaOnline: “We are proud of Cape Town being named Best LGBTQ+ City Destination. We have just celebrated our best Cape Town Pride Festival with over 50 events over three weeks. We are confident that we and our partners will host a WorldPride festival justifying Cape Town as a favourite LGBTQ + destination.”
A Global LGBTQ+ Travel Destination
Cape Town has increasingly positioned itself as one of the world’s most exciting LGBTQ+ destinations, offering a thriving queer culture, welcoming neighbourhoods, and a year-round calendar of events.
Held annually during ITB Berlin, the Spartacus Travel Awards are widely regarded as one of the most influential honours in LGBTQ+ travel.
For Cape Town Tourism, the recognition further cements the city’s status on the global stage as a destination where diversity is celebrated and visitors are invited to experience the magic of the Mother City.

I have to agree with this
As a trans woman the Pride weekend was the best of my life. I could walk the streets as a woman with zero negativity. Security guards at the Cape Quater mall directed me to the ladies restroom. WOW
