The End of an Era? MambaOnline Suspends MeetMarket but Explores Future Revival

MambaOnline has announced that it has suspended all services on MeetMarket, its long-running LGBTQ+ dating and networking platform, for the foreseeable future.

The decision follows an assessment of the resources required to adequately maintain the platform’s technical infrastructure and security standards in an increasingly complex digital environment.

MeetMarket was one of South Africa’s first dedicated online dating and networking services for LGBTQ+ people and has served the community for many years, helping thousands of users connect, build friendships, find relationships and engage with others across the country.

“We know this news will come as a disappointment to many people who have been part of the MeetMarket community over the years,” said MambaOnline Founder, Luiz De Barros. “This decision was not taken lightly. Unfortunately, we are currently unable to commit the resources necessary to ensure that the platform continues to meet the technical and security standards that our users deserve.”

While services have been suspended, MambaOnline stressed that this does not necessarily mark the end of MeetMarket.

“We believe there remains a need for safe, community-focused online spaces that bring LGBTQ+ people together,” said MambaOnline Managing Editor, Nompilo Gwala. “We are therefore exploring options to revitalise MeetMarket in the future as a more modern, secure and sustainable platform.”

Since its launch, MeetMarket has occupied a unique place in South Africa’s LGBTQ+ history. Long before the emergence of today’s mainstream dating and social networking apps, the platform offered queer people a dedicated space to meet, communicate and build community at a time when such opportunities were often limited.

MambaOnline expressed its gratitude to the many users who supported the platform throughout its existence.

“We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been part of the MeetMarket journey. We hope that the platform played a positive role in helping people find friendship, companionship, love, support and community over the years,” said De Barros.

The organisation also apologised for the unexpected nature of the announcement and any inconvenience caused by the suspension of services.

MambaOnline said it will provide updates should plans for a future reimagined version of MeetMarket progress.

“For now, we say thank you to our users for their loyalty, support and trust. While this chapter is closing, we remain hopeful about what the future may hold,” added Gwala.
