Acclaimed Simon Nkoli Musical Returns to Johannesburg for Youth Month

A powerful musical celebrating the life and legacy of LGBTQ+ and anti-apartheid icon Simon Nkoli is set to return to Johannesburg this June for a limited three-performance run.

Nkoli: A Fierce and Fabulous Life (previously known as Nkoli: The Vogue Opera) will take to the stage at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre at the University of Johannesburg on 12 and 13 June, before heading to Germany for its European premiere at the prestigious Theater der Welt festival in Chemnitz.

Described by Daily Maverick reviewer Keith Bain as “fierce, fabulous … and freaking fantastic” with “passionate storytelling, powerful activism” and “masterful melodies”, the production tells the remarkable story of one of South Africa’s most influential LGBTQ+ activists.

Celebrating the Life of Simon Nkoli

Created and composed by acclaimed South African composer Philip Miller, the musical traces Nkoli’s journey from his childhood in Sebokeng township to becoming a fearless anti-apartheid activist, LGBTQ+ pioneer and organiser of Johannesburg’s first Pride march.

Nkoli was among those charged during the Delmas Treason Trial and became a leading voice in the fight against both apartheid and homophobia.

Blending music, rap, lip-syncing, dance and archival video, the production explores themes of courage, love, resistance and resilience during one of the most turbulent periods in South African history.

The production stars S’bo Gyre Nene as the Emcee, Simbone Qonya as Simon Nkoli, Ann Masina as Simon’s Mother and Nokuthula Magubane as Bev Ditsie.

Youth Month Focus on a New Generation

Following its successful premiere at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre in 2023 and a sold-out season at Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre in 2024, the musical returns during South Africa’s Youth Month with a strong focus on emerging talent.

At the centre of the production is performer, writer and assistant director S’bo Gyre, who co-wrote the libretto and reprises the role of Emcee.

“It’s important to reinforce historic queer representation in all fabric of South Africa’s history and existence,” said Gyre.

The production also arrives as South Africa marks 50 years since the 1976 student uprising, placing young artists and activists at the heart of conversations about freedom, identity and social justice.

Ballroom Culture Meets Political Resistance

Drawing inspiration from ballroom and vogue culture as spaces of LGBTQI+ self-expression, Nkoli: A Fierce and Fabulous Life combines opera, voguing, protest songs, dance and multimedia storytelling.

The production showcases a cast of young performers whose work connects Nkoli’s legacy to contemporary struggles for equality, dignity and visibility.

Producer Philip Miller highlighted the role of mentorship in nurturing emerging talent through Musorelief SA, the non-profit organisation behind the production.

“One only needs to look at Simbone Qonya (who plays the role of Simon Nkoli) to see his enormous growth over the past five years under the mentorship of our incredible maestro, conductor, choral master Tshegofatso Moeng,” said Miller.

More than a historical retelling, the musical serves as both a celebration and a call to action, reminding audiences that art remains a powerful tool for resistance, healing, joy and imagining a more inclusive future.
