Brazilian police are investigating a serial killer who appears to be targeting gay men in the city of Sao Paulo.

Local newspapers reports that at least 13 gay men have been killed in the city’s outskirts between July 2007 and August 2008.

Authorities say that the murders were initially investigated as separate incidents but police now believe that a single person could be responsible.

A team of 15 investigators have been allocated to work on the case. The victims were aged between their 20s and 40s and were found in a park known as a gay cruising spot.

Twelve died from gunshot wounds, usually to the head, while one man was killed by a blow to the head.

“We are dealing with a suspect who kills homosexuals, exclusively. In his mind, he’s cleaning up the place. He hates homosexuals. Who is he? We don’t know,” said local police chief Paulo Fernando Fortunato.

The suspected serial killer has been dubbed the “rainbow maniac” by the media.
