TRANS PRISONER REFUSED TREATMENT

Advertorial

A transgender inmate in the US was denied further hair removal treatment on Tuesday by district judge Mark Wolf, as he believes she will not suffer “serious harm” without it.

Michelle Kosilek, formerly known as Robert, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her wife, Cheryl, in 1990.

Wolf denied her request for electrolysis, but said he may still revisit the decision. Kosilek’s lawyer argued there was a “serious medical need” for her treatment, which was halted after only seven sessions.

Kosilek also awaits a ruling on whether the state will pay for her sex-change operation.

In 2002 Wolf said that she was entitled to treatment for gender-identity disorder, but stopped short of ordering taxpayer-funded surgery. Kosilek unsuccessfully sued again in 2005.
