Mel Gibson’s adopted gay brother has come forward to defend his celebrity sibling, insisting that Gibson (55) is not a homophobe.

Andrew Gibson (43), went public with his identity for the first time in an interview with Australia’s

Speaking about Gibson’s taped tirades against former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, Andrew said: “When I heard them I just thought, ‘That isn’t Mel’. He has never said anything abusive, aggressive or racist in his life.”

In a 1991 interview, Gibson famously said: “With this look, who’s going to think I’m gay? I don’t lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?”

Andrew, however said that the comments were not meant to be offensive and that his brother had been supportive when he came out over twenty years ago.

“He’s a straight man and he was illustrating that fact. In the same way a gay man wouldn’t want to have sex with a woman.

“He never meant to upset anyone. I have never once heard anything anti-gay come out of his mouth.”

Andrew revealed that when he told Mel at a family dinner at the age of 22 that he was gay, the star replied: “It’s not my choice, but I love you and you’re my brother”.
