The gay and lesbian community in Kenya has launched a campaign to assist their starving countrymen who are facing one of the worst droughts in decades.

The Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya has called on LGBT people to donate food and other items to help those living in the country’s arid northern regions.

“We are teaming up with all our member organisations and individuals… for a joint contribution towards the current famine situation in Kenya,” said Maqc Eric Gitau, General Manager of GALCK.

GALCK will be collecting non-perishable foodstuffs and other goods at its offices from Thursday the 28th of July untill Monday the 1st of August.

The donations will be handed to the Kenya Red Cross on Tuesday 2nd August.

“We want to be part of Kenya; we feel for fellow Kenyans who suffer and especially those who have little than us,” said Denis Nzioka, PR and Media Officer at Gay Kenya.

“If we can save lives through the little we have, we will,” he added.

The Horn of Africa region is reeling from a drought that has affected Somalia, Ethiopia and parts of Kenya. The UN has declared a famine in the area with 12 million people at risk of starvation.
