10 LESBIANS ARRESTED IN CAMEROON

There are reports that 10 women said to be lesbians have been arrested in Cameroon and will remain jailed at least until they go to trial.

There are few details, but the news was first reported by Cameroon Radio Television, said Associated Press.

The Cameroonian broadcaster claims that the women are being detained in Ambam, about 300 kilometres south of the capital of Yaounde, on charges of lesbianism.

Both male and female same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Cameroon with penalties including imprisonment of up to five years.

In November, three men were sentenced to five years in prison and a fine on charges of homosexuality for having oral sex.

In April, Jean-Claude Roger Mbede was convicted and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for being gay.

According to Amnesty International, homophobia is endemic in Cameroonian society and arrests, prosecutions and trials of gay men occur on a regular basis.
