Hong Kong pop star Anthony Wong has come out as gay on stage in front of thousands of fans at the conclusion of a series of concerts in the city.
Lit by a single spotlight at the end of his show at the Hong Kong Coliseum, he ended years of speculation about his sexual orientation.
“People don’t need to guess whether or not I’m a tongzhi [Chinese slang for homosexual] anymore. I’m saying, I’m gay. I’m a homosexual. G-A-Y.”
According to China Real Time Report, the announcement was greeted by whoops and cheers from the audience.
Wong (49) added: “I’m sorry, members of the media. For the next 20 years, I’ll keep singing songs, but you don’t need to ask me this question any longer.”
Wong started as a commercial radio DJ in Hong Kong in 1984. The following year he answered a wanted ad for a singer and began a career as a performer.
He reached the peak of his career in the 1990s and went on to found a successful music production company, creating music for other high-profile pop singers.
