THE GAYEST COACH TOUR ON EARTH
Remember the movie Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert? Ever, wished such a coach tour really existed with full drag and costume every day across the country? Well it’s real, honey!
Thanks to Budget Rent a Car, The Gay Flag of South Africa is about to go on its second national gay tour! It promises 5000 kms, 16 days, full costume, drag, bitch fights and camp hilarity 24/7.
The Gay Flag of South Africa’s Coach Tour encompasses the concept of “exhibitionist activism” which uses drag, costume and flamboyance to get people and media attention so they can raise the issues of homophobic violence and other challenges facing the LGBT community in South Africa.
Last year’s tour brought the issue of corrective rape to communities in Cape Town, Barrydale, Robertson, Mossel Bay, PE, GraafReneitt, Bloem, Jozi, Soweto, KwaThema and Pretoria; interacting with both CBOs and NPOs during the day and clubs and bars at night.
The tour also did major radio and TV interviews in each region to sensitise the broader public around the tour and LGBTI acceptance.
Want to get on the coach?
To decide who goes on the tour, the Gay Flag of SA is launching a national talent search tour for four entertainers, a search for two gay charity representatives to do outreach work during the tour and also a design competition for the coach, where the chosen designer can win a seat on the coach and a cash prize of R5000, sponsored by Budget Car Hire SA!
The lucky winners will be truly pampered; a seat on the coach along with the accommodation and other benefits add up to over R25 000. However, the real value is for the entertainers, charities and artist to gain broad exposure through mainstream and gay media to help launch and promote their careers and/or causes.

You have one of three ways to get on the coach:
1. ROCK THE COACH!
If you are “fierce”, can “own a stage” and wow a crowd you should definitely enter! Fill in the application online and agree to the terms and conditions. Be sure to add links of your YouTube videos showing you perform live!
Judging will be done by Melanie Lowe, Soli Philander, The Soap Girls, The FlagBoys and Lola Fine.
2. SHARE THE COACH!
Any existing activist, community based organisation or non-profit can utilise the coach tour by sending one representative to do outreach work during the tour and to promote their cause.
We are looking for one representative focused on LGBTI equality and one on HIV/AIDS. Each individual must include a full proposal on how to make use of the coach tour for their work according to the criteria stipulated in the Ts & Cs.
Judging will be done in conjunction with the Gay Flag of SA, Budget Rent a Car with support from Phindi Malaza of FEW of all LGBTI equality proposals and Glenn De Swart of Health4Men for review of all proposals on HIV/AIDS.
3. WRAP THE COACH!
if you can sketch, paint or draw put your creative juices to work and design the graphics for the coach. Yes, the whole coach could be wrapped in your design, and NO you don’t have to be a professional artist or designer. You would also be the luckiest coach tour member winning a R5000 cash prize courtesy of Budget Rent A Car! You might even get sponsored flights should you reside outside Cape Town.
