DRAG STAR FORCED TO PERFORM OUT OF DRAG

Advertorial

Rhea Litr

American drag star Rhea Litr (Joshua Miller) was forced to perform out of drag in Dubai after the authorities barred her from dressing as a woman.

Litr, best known for Let’s Have a KaiKai, a spoof of the Scissor Sisters song, was booked to perform at the opening of Carnage, a gay friendly party in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

At the last minute she was informed by security officers that any performers that dressed in drag would face arrest.

Instead of disappointing her fans, Litr went on stage without a drag outfit to perform Let’s Have a KaiKai.

Litr later wrote on Facebook, “It was a super last minute trip and an AMAZING Experience! I didn’t even have to get in Drag (drag is against the Dubai law) But that still didn’t stop us from having the time of our lives!”

Cross-dressing is illegal in the UAE, which includes the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras al-Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, Fujairah and Sharjah.

In February, a 42-year-old Filipino was sentenced to two years imprisonment on charges of sexual assault, cross dressing and pretending to be a woman.

In March, another Filipino, a 23-year-old, was found guilty of cross-dressing and was sentenced to three months in prison. He will be deported once his jail sentence is completed.

Homosexuality is also illegal in the UAE. Punishment includes imprisonment, fines, deportation, and the death penalty as well as hormone treatment and chemical castration.
