WATCH TOYA DELAZY’S MEMORIAM
Trendsetting music star Toya Delazy’s moving new music video for the single Memoriam has made its debut.
The song is a touching ballad that was written in honour of a teacher who passed away in 2009 and is also in memory of her late mother Princess Lethuxolo.
“Memoriam is about any kind of loss, not just death,” said Delazy. “It could be the loss of a relationship or even oneself. I sing about accepting things that are hard to bear. It’s like melodic medicine for the soul.”
Filmed in Gauteng and directed by Fausto Becatti, the video follows two story lines and explores themes of grief and loss as well as acceptance and healing.
“The opportunity to work with Toya was really exciting, and I fell in love with the track from the moment I heard it,” said Becatti. “It’s a very powerful track and I thought it would allow for an equally powerful video. It was a great experience working with her, and I think she was really brave to give me the freedom to move in a new direction for this video.”
The song is the sixth single off of Delazy’s SAMA winning debut album Due Drop Deluxe.
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter has recently been more open about her sexuality and her two year relationship with her girlfriend Ali.
“I’m happy. It’s a special feeling. And it’s hard to find love again after losing someone you really care about. You never think it’s going to happen again. You’re scared, ‘What if I lose them?’” she told City Press in June.
