The contested bill, with the anti-gay message

A lesbian waitress has been accused of faking being insulted by allegedly homophobic patrons that led to her receiving international attention and donations.

Dayna Morales a former Marine and a waitress at the Gallop Asian Bistro in New Jersey claimed on social media that she had been offended by a member of the family who commented that she looked like a man and not a woman.

She said that to make matters worse when the family left the restaurant they did not tip her and instead scrawled on the bill: “Sorry, I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle and the way you live your life.”

Morales became the subject of wide media attention and reportedly received around $3,000 in donations from sympathetic members of the public, which she promised to donate to charity.

Now, the patrons, who have remained unidentified, have come forward to the NBC 4 New York TV channel with their copy of the receipt and their credit card slip. These appear to show that they actually left her a 20 percent tip and never wrote anything on the bill.

They also insisted that they are in no way homophobic. “We’ve never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that,” said the wife.

She added: “I think there’s enough hate and intolerance in the world that to create it when it wasn’t there is shameful and dishonourable”.

Morales has insisted that she did not receive a tip and told NBC 4 New York that she did not write the slur on the bill. “That’s not my handwriting… I don’t know, all I know is what I’ve been saying,” she said.

The restaurant said that it is investigating the matter.
