GAGA, CANDELABRA & DALLAS BUYERS CLUB FOR GAY AWARDS
Honouring a host of gay affirming television, film and music, America’s Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has announced the nominees for its annual media awards.
Television shows up for awards include the lesbian prison comedy drama Orange is the New Black; same-sex family drama The Fosters, the ever popular medical series Grey’s Anatomy, and the made for television film Behind the Candelabra, starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
Cinema offerings such as Blue Is the Warmest Color, winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival; the Oscar-nominated Dallas Buyers Club; Kill Your Darlings, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan; and the Oscar-nominated Philomena have been nominated.
The documentaries Call Me Kuchu and God Loves Uganda, both about LGBT people in Uganda, are also up for awards.
In the music world, GLAAD has acknowledged recent albums by Lady Gaga (ARTPOP), Elton John (The Diving Board) and Goldfrapp (Tales of Us), among others.
“Since its inception 25 years ago, the GLAAD Media Awards have reshaped the news and entertainment industries, inspiring thoughtful and inclusive characters and plot-lines that have driven equality forward,” said GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis.
“This year has brought momentous progress for LGBT people and families – and our nominees have created images and stories that continue to challenge misconceptions, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts and minds of millions all across the globe.”
The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles on April 12 at The Beverly Hilton and in New York on May 3 at the Waldorf Astoria New York. Special Honourees for each city and recognition of an international LGBT advocate will be announced in coming weeks.
Behind the Candelabra was superb – can’t wait for Dallas Buyers Club.
