Two European footballers have caused an international stir after they celebrated a victory by smooching each other in front of the cameras.
While a quick joyous peck between soccer players is not unheard of in the game, the kiss between Spain’s Ivan Rakitic and Portugal’s Daniel Carrico from Sevilla was a much more lingering, and some might say passionate, affair.
The two were celebrating winning the Europa Cup over rival team Benfica at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on Wednesday night when they locked lips.
The intimate moment comes on the heels of another headline-grabbing man-on-man sporting kiss that cause a furore in the US.
On Saturday, American footballer Michael Sam kissed his boyfriend Vito Cammisano on television after hearing the news that he’d become the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team.
It seems that images of two men kissing still have the power to disturb, leading Rakitic to have to explain what happened.
“He wanted to give me a kiss on my face, it turned out that way and the cameras just happened to catch it. It was just luck that it turned out that way, what do you want me to do?” he asked.
