Soulful British singer-songwriter Sam Smith is causing waves with his new music video that suggests that he could be gay or bisexual.
In the clip for the song Leave Your Lover, Smith is seen with a man and a woman, ambiguously flirting and dancing.
He sings about his unrequited love: “Just leave your lover, leave him for me, Leave your lover, leave him for me.”
It’s not clear who he’s referring to in the song until the end of the video. (Watch it below.)
The 22-year-old rising star, who has been the subject of rumours about his sexuality, is a third-cousin of singer Lily Allen.
Since his debut in 2012, Smith’s career has been shooting skyward. Katy Perry recently tweeted that he’s “a male Adele” and his début studio album In the Lonely Hour has just been released. A US tour has also been announced.
Smith cites big female voices like Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, Etta James and Beyoncé among his strongest influences.
