ZIM PASTOR ARRESTED OVER GAY SEX VIDEOS & SMSES
A Zimbabwe pastor has been caught in a sting operation after police found text messages “incriminating” him in a gay relationship.
According to The Herald, Pastor Aleck Muchabayiwa was detained and questioned by police in the city of Gweru on Friday.
The authorities claim they have video footage of his sexual liaisons and found text messages on the phone of his alleged 22-year-old male lover, Leroy Magezamoyo.
Magezamoyo had earlier been arrested for alleged sexual harassment of two college students. The newspaper said that he “lured the two students using cakes, chocolate bars and soft drinks.”
Said a police source: “Pastor Muchabayiwa was picked up by police after they stumbled upon text messages in Magezamoyo’s mobile phone in which he was communicating with the man of the cloth with regards to their homosexual escapades.”
Officers pretended to be Magezamoyo in text messages to the pastor and arranged a meeting at which he was then arrested. They reportedly found the sex videos on the clergyman’s phone.
Police say that he “confessed” to having homosexual relationships but was released after spending a night in jail. He has not yet been charged and refused to address the issue when contacted by the newspaper.
Magezamoyo remains in jail on the sexual harassment charges.
Gay sex and public affection are illegal in Zimbabwe, with penalties of up to three years in jail. Same-sex marriage is also illegal, as specified in the country’s Constitution.
Last month, a Harare magistrate refused to grant bail to a ward councillor and his alleged lover arrested on homosexuality charges because homosexuality has been publicly denounced by Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe has openly attacked and vilified gays and lesbians for years and recently promised to further crack down on the community and the country’s LGBT rights group, GALZ.
