Global fast food chain Burger King has been selling a Gay Pride burger wrapped in rainbow coloured packaging in San Francisco.
The inside packaging for the so-called “Proud Whopper”, proclaims: “We are all the same inside.”
“It showcases who we are as a brand,” Fernando Machado, senior vice president of global brand management at Burger King, told USA Today.
“It shows how we, as a brand, believe in self-expression,” he said.
The campaign is limited, with only one downtown San Francisco outlet – which was on the route of the city’s Pride Parade this past weekend – selling the item this week.
The company made a wider splash though, by posting an image on its Facebook page that features a series of rainbow coloured burgers, along with its slogan #BeYourWay.
While the sentiment was welcomed by many, the image was not-unexpectedly slammed by some of the chain’s more conservative and bigoted customers.
Andrew Hladek commented, “BK you lost my business I will no longer buy any of your products. I am a believer of Jesus Christ and I don’t support sexual immorality,” while Dorothy Phenicie ranted, “Another company selling out to the perverted 2 PERCENT.”
It would be great if Burger King South Africa, which only recently opened its doors in the country, made a similar gay-friendly statement.
