An Indian woman has had her husband arrested after she secretly filmed him having gay sex.

One year into their marriage, the woman became concerned about the husband’s lack of interest in sex and suspected that he was having relationships with men.

“The wife got suspicious about his behaviour because he did not have [a] physical relationship with her. She got more suspicious when she realised that her husband would return home with male friends in her absence,” Sandip Patil, deputy commissioner of police, Central Division, Bangalore, told BBC Hindi.

She installed CCTV cameras in their home and filmed his liaisons with men while she was away for a week. After seeing the footage on her return, she filed a complaint with the police. Patil confirmed that they had acted on the report and arrested the man.

The couple’s identify has not been revealed, but the woman is reported to be a 31-year-old dentist and the 32-year-old man is a software engineer.

The woman has also alleged that the man’s parents were aware that he is gay and had ruined her life by allowing the arranged marriage to go ahead. She also said she went to the police to ensure that she would not be blamed for the failure of the marriage.

Dr Vivek Benegal, Professor of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), told the BBC that the husband and wife were both victims of social pressure.

“The man cannot be blamed. Neither can the woman be blamed. We can only blame the social structure. They have been forced to formalise a lie,” he said, adding that it is “tragic that in an era when science has proved that sexual orientation is not a vice, society should be forcing zebras to be horses.”

It is believed that the case is possibly the first in which someone has been arrested for homosexuality since India’s Supreme Court reinstated the colonial-era ban on gay sex in December last year.
