Kinto Rothmans after the attack

Shocking evidence of the homophobic beating of Ghanaian music event promoter Kinto Rothmans has emerged online.

According to local media, Rothmans, real name Albert Appaih, was attacked over claims that he had sex or attempted to have sex with another man, Salim Abubakar.

In a video (see below), a terrified and already bloody Rothmans appears to be forced by his unseen attackers into saying on camera, “I want chop Salim”, which means “I want to have sex with Salim.”

It’s unclear what happens next but it seems that Rothmans is then again beaten amid shouts from the mob. A picture of the victim covered in blood was also posted on Twitter.

A later report confirmed that one person has been arrested in connection with the attack in Nima, a suburb of Accra.

The Divisional Commander of the Nima Police Command, ACP Nuhu Jango, told journalists that the allegations against Rothmans had been fabricated by his attackers and that the two men were just friends who had met through social media.

In addition to being beaten, Rothmans was also forced by the thugs to go to an ATM and withdraw cash in order for them to release him.

Well known Ghanaian singer Efya expressed her shock and disgust at Rothmans’ assault on Twitter.

“Guy, the world is changing.. get with the program.. Gay ppl are here.. Get with the program. It’s who they are.. so you be you.. let them be them,” she tweeted.

She added: “You can’t beat the Gay out of someone!! You can’t!!”

It appears that anti-gay sentiment and violence are on the rise in Ghana, where gay sex is illegal and carries a sentence of three years in prison.

This past weekend, Ghanaian police shot and killed a 14-year-old boy trying to stop a rampaging school mob intent on attacked two other pupils accused of being gay.

In August last year, a 21-year-old was arrested on accusations that he is gay and was “recruiting other youth into the practice.” Police detained him after angry locals attacked his family home and tried to lynch the young man.

In May, it was reported that a group of Muslim youth had killed a man they accused of being gay.
