Ryan Reynolds’ big screen superhero to be “pansexual”
It appears that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool Marvel character will be the first sexually fluid male superhero to headline a big screen movie.
Deadpool, described as a smart-talking antihero, will feature in a stand-alone spinoff of the X-Men series. Reynolds previously played the character in a short scene in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009.
In a recent interview with Collider, director Tim Miller was asked if the character’s sexuality will feature in the film. He responded: “Pansexual! I want that quoted. Pansexual Deadpool.”
Reynolds added: “There is some sexuality in this movie for sure. You kinda think you have moments when you’re shooting where you think, ‘This is, uh, a little excessive. This is a comic book movie. Are we gonna get away with this?’ But so far so good. Studio hasn’t crushed us with anything.”
The character has been depicted as being open to both genders in the comic series. In 2013, Deadpool writer Gerry Dugan said on Twitter that Deadpool is “omnisexual”.
Co-creator Fabian Nicieza has also stated that, “Deadpool is whatever sexual inclination his brain tells him he is in THAT moment. He is NO sex and ALL sexes. He is yours and everyone else’s. So not dismissive, but rather the epitome of inclusive.”
Deadpool is set to be released in South Africa in February next year.
