Is David Beckham really the “sexiest man alive”?

Advertorial

is_david_beckham_sexiest_man_aliveNews that David Beckham has been named this year’s “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine elicited a yawn and a little irritation from us.

The announcement was made on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, with a grinning David jokingly (we hope) quipping, “It’s the best moment of my career. I can’t believe it.”

It’s not that he isn’t a sexy man, he is. It’s also not an age thing – we think it’s great to celebrate all those hotties over forty out there in the world.

The problem is that the choice is so boringly predictable. David is a pretty tired and overused contender in the sex symbol department.

He’s been around forever, topping lists of this kind and appearing on magazine covers for almost two decades, so yet another sexiest “title” is nothing to get excited about.

It’s also been pointed out that in the 30 years of the magazine awarding the title, only once has it gone to a black man (Denzel Washington – 1996), and never to an openly gay man.

There’s a whole raft of newer male celebrities that could have been awarded the title this year, such as the likes of Idris Elba (he came fourth this year), Charlie Hunnam (seventh place) or out stars Matt Bomer and Empire’s Jussie Smollett (eighth).

It’s time to shake things up a little, People!
