Humour or homophobia? Afrikaans rapper Jack Parow has been slammed by some for seemingly suggesting that gay people aren’t very good at sport.
On Thursday, Parow shared a video clip on social media relating to Australia’s one-day series defeat to South Africa in Cape Town.
The video appeared to show an Australian cricketer groping a teammate as they stood listening to the national anthem.
The star commented, along with the clip: “No fkn wonder #australia lost, one of their players was batting for the other team // Join me at #aandklas in #pretoria tomorrow night to celebrate the white wash… Whoop whoop.”
Melissa (melissanortier) joined in on the “joke” by writing in Afrikaans (along with a couple of smiley faces): “Australia didn’t sleep that night because that guy kept everyone awake. Strength to the poor guy who had to share a room with him…”
While many found Parow’s post humorous, others felt that it was problematic. “Nothing wrong with ‘batting for the other team.’ Perhaps a bit homophobic?!” asked Yusuf Laher (yusuf_laher_) on Instagram.
The Lion (@thelionmutters) commented on Twitter that, “it’s so problematic. And exhausting. Like there was no need to make it about homosexuality meaning he can’t play,” Saya Pierce-Jones (saya_pj) called it “homophobic as fuck,” while Garyn (mentalmix) added that, “Using a ‘joke’ in bad taste to promote your show. Fuck right off”.
A rather defensive Parow responded: “…what part of my comment says that there is anything wrong with batting for the other team? You trying to hide your homophobic tendencies by overcompensating a bit? You can come gargle my balls any day if it will help you feel more open to ‘the other team’.”

I think it was harmless fun, a word play on batting for the other team. Nowhere did i pick up anything homophobic.
