One of South Africa’s most high profile gay celebrity couples have sadly broken up after a tumultuous and very public relationship.

In an interview with Isolezwe published on Sunday, Moshe Ndiki confirmed the shocking news that he and his husband, singer Phelo Bala, had quietly gotten divorced.

While he did not elaborate on the reasons behind the split, he insisted that he had not been put off the possibility of marrying again in the future.

“As a former spouse, I would still marry again because I love marriage and I love love,” Moshe said. “The problem is not in love or marriage, but it’s in people.”

The actor, TV and radio host and influencer, who recently celebrated his 30th birthday, does not appear to have addressed the divorce on his social media. Phelo has also not commented about the status of the relationship on social media.

Late last month there were unconfirmed rumours that there was trouble in paradise with claims that Phelo had moved out from the couple’s home.

The two men got engaged in September 2019 when Phelo proposed to Moshe at a surprise sunset picnic overlooking the Johannesburg skyline.

They celebrated their first anniversary as a couple with a loved-up photoshoot for Bona magazine in January 2020, but a few months later things took a dramatic turn for the worst.

In July of that year, bombshell reports emerged that the two were embroiled in a legal battle centred on accusations of violent fights and domestic abuse with alcohol allegedly being a contributing factor.

It was alleged that Moshe had assaulted Phelo with a candle stand at their Johannesburg home, leaving him with a wound that required stitches. Moshe in turn alleged that he’d been assaulted by Phelo on various occasions.

Then, to everyone’s surprise, in October, the couple were back on social media proclaiming their love for one another. Moshe also revealed that they were in fact married and were celebrating their first wedding anniversary.

While their romance has now finally ended (or has it?) we wish both Moshe and Phelo all the best for the future.
