
In another positive step for LGBTQ+ representation in South Africa’s legislature, out and proud ANC member Palomino Jama has joined Parliament during International Pride Month.
Jama, a member of the ANC Youth League’s National Executive Committee (NEC), was sworn in as a Member of the 7th Parliament on Tuesday by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza.
Jama, who describes herself on social media as a “Feminist, Gay and all that good stuff”, marked the occasion on Facebook as “a big day,” adding: “Let’s get the job done.”
She also expressed gratitude to her supporters, writing that their well-wishes “have motivated me to really work hard and excel in my new responsibilities.”
Pride Month Appointment Welcomed
The Embrace Diversity Movement (EDM) congratulated the young politician on her appointment, highlighting the significance of her swearing-in during International Pride Month and Youth Month in South Africa.
Describing her as her a seasoned queer activist and dedicated community builder, EDM noted that she previously served as a member of the Wits Student Representative Council, Chairperson of the All Faculty Council at Wits University, Gender Officer for the South African Union of Students, and as a member of the Department of Higher Education and Training’s Task Team on Gender-Based Violence.
Jama also sat on the board of the National Skills Authority prior to joining Parliament.
Representation That Matters
The EDM called Jama’s deployment to Parliament “a strategic step in strengthening both the ANC Caucus and the National Assembly,” adding that her presence “meaningfully advances youth and queer representation in public office.”
The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) also welcomed Jama’s swearing-in, stating: “We wish her well in this new role and trust that she will serve the people of South Africa with dedication and integrity.”
Growing LGBTQ+ Representation in Parliament
Palomino Jama joins a growing number of out LGBTQ+ Members of Parliament.
Among the most prominent are Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (ANC) amd Dr Dion George, Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DA)
Jama’s appointment is another stride forward in ensuring the voices of LGBTQ+ South Africans are reflected and respected within the country’s democratic institutions.
