The Other Side of Mika Stefano: Gossip Blogger to Queer Business Leader

Once known as South Africa’s top gay celebrity blogger, Mika Stefano has always been visible. But today, the entrepreneur, innovator, and influencer represents more than visibility—he embodies the rise of queer leadership that no longer asks for space, but owns it.

From his early days as the GP’s Gossip Gangster to his current role as the driving force behind STRONG PR, Marketing and Events, Mika’s journey reflects a bold evolution. He’s become what he calls a “corporate mother” to a new generation of queer creatives and entrepreneurs, holding space for others to shine. For Mika, authenticity isn’t just personal—it’s powerful.

“I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve stayed true to who I am. Through every chapter of my life… I’ve never dimmed or hidden my queerness. My sexuality is a big part of my identity, and I’ve always worn it boldly, not as a label, but as a source of pride and power.”

Finding Joy in the Small Things

Mika laughs when asked what made him smile today. “I try to find joy in the small things—it’s the little wins that set the tone for my day,” he says, recalling his morning coffee order that came with an unexpected drizzle of caramel and all the traffic lights turning green on his commute. But what also made him happy? Sitting down with MambaOnline for the interview.

“I grew up reading Mamba. It was one of the first places where I saw people like me represented. Years ago, I had the chance to be featured when I was still in the entertainment scene – but to return now, in this new chapter of my life and career, feels full circle.”

From Gossip Gangster to STRONG Visionary

Much has changed since Mika’s red-carpet days. He now runs a boutique HIIT cardio gym in Melrose Arch, STRONG at Moove, alongside STRONG PR, Marketing and Events—a growing agency that has branched into STRONG Media Productions, STRONG Coffee, and most recently, STRONG Event Décor.

The projects are diverse, from luxury weddings to MTV Shuga Down South’s digital rollout, but the thread running through them is clear: collaboration.

“At the heart of it all, what excites me most is the opportunity to collaborate with people, hear what they’re building and help them amplify their vision. That’s what keeps me inspired.”

Shifting the Spotlight

The transformation from nightlife regular to business leader hasn’t erased Mika’s past—it’s built on it.

“There was a time you’d find me at every Jozi red carpet event. These days, I’m not walking down the carpet… I’m the one rolling it out,” he reflects. “I’ve shifted from being in the spotlight to helping others and their brands shine. That shift—from attention to intention—has been powerful.”

Despite his evolution, Mika chuckles at how some still imagine him as a gossip blogger. “Some people genuinely believe I’m still doing celebrity gossip or entertainment commentary,” he says.

“That version of Mika was fun and necessary at the time. But I’ve grown, evolved and shifted into new spaces. It’s not about erasing the past—it’s about honouring where I’ve been while being proud of where I’m going.”

Staying Inspired

What fuels Mika now is both deeply personal and beautifully communal. At home, he finds comfort in quiet routines, pilates, and time with his dog, Uber. At work, it’s about creating spaces that are collaborative, bold, and unapologetically queer.

Above all, it’s the next generation that gives him hope.

“There’s a new generation rising—bold, unapologetic and beautifully themselves. Watching them take up space, live out loud and challenge outdated norms gives me so much hope.”

He continues: “It’s incredibly affirming to see how far we’ve come. And it reminds me that every small act of defiance, every moment of showing up authentically, contributed to the space today’s youth are able to thrive in. They inspire me to keep going, to keep showing up and to keep carving out space for others.”

For Mika Stefano, strength is more than physical fitness. It’s about authenticity, resilience, and building a future where queer leadership isn’t rare, but recognised and respected.

As he puts it: “What matters most is doing work that feels aligned. Work that’s creative, collaborative and makes people feel seen, celebrated and most importantly, STRONG.”
