South Africa LGBTIQ+ Rights Watch: May 2026

MambaOnline publishes a monthly overview of reported LGBTIQ+ rights violations in South Africa, including hate speech, hate crimes and other forms of discrimination.

We also track the progress of cases through the criminal justice system and highlight key human rights developments. While we aim to be as comprehensive as possible, many incidents go unreported or are not identified as hate crimes.

Below is our summary for May 2026.

More Delays in High-Profile Grindr Gang 7 Trial Spark Concern

The “Grindr Gang 7” trial, involving allegations of kidnapping, assault, extortion and attempted murder of a queer man who was reportedly targeted through the dating app Grindr in September 2023, was postponed again in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court due to the presiding magistrate’s involvement in another matter. The case, which had already heard testimony from the survivor, his family members, police and investigators, was rescheduled for August 2026, when the prosecution was expected to call further witnesses, including medical and forensic experts. The repeated delays continued to raise concern among civil society groups and supporters.

Bail Hearing Rolls Over in LGBTIQ+ Teen KwaKhanya Mhlanganisi Murder

Bail hearings for two accused in the murder case of 16-year-old queer Cape Town teenager KwaKhanya Mhlanganisi continued in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court. Mhlanganisi was murdered in December 2025 in Site C, Khayelitsha, in what activists believe was a homophobic hate crime after he was reportedly targeted with homophobic slurs, beaten and burned. During the hearing, accused number one withdrew his bail application, while accused number two continued with the process; however, the matter could not be finalised due to time constraints and was postponed to June. The case continued to draw concern amid ongoing delays, with activists remaining present at court to support the family and monitor proceedings.

Pretoria Court Acquits “Corrective Rape” Accused

A Pretoria court acquitted a man accused of an alleged “corrective rape” of a lesbian teenager who was assaulted in Atteridgeville on 1 January 2020 when she was 16 years old. The court found that the State had not proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt. LGBTIQ+ activists and organisations expressed outrage and disappointment at the outcome, arguing that serious investigative shortcomings — particularly the mishandling and reported inconclusiveness of DNA evidence — undermined the prosecution’s case. This is despite the survivor’s consistent identification of the accused, alleged confession to family members, and claims of attempted bribery. Activists called for an independent review of the investigation and prosecution.

Report Exposes Gap Between LGBT+ Policies and Reality in South African Workplaces

The SAWEI 2026 National Report, released by the SA LGBT+ Management Forum, found that while many South African organisations have strengthened visible LGBT+ inclusion policies and infrastructure, the lived experience of LGBT+ people across workplaces and related systems remained uneven and inconsistent. The report highlighted a gap between policy and practice, noting that although employers increasingly implemented Employee Resource Groups, anti-discrimination measures, inclusive recruitment practices and identity systems, these did not always translate into everyday dignity, with ongoing issues such as misgendering, unequal benefits, and inconsistent application of policies across internal and customer-facing systems.

Deputy Minister Steve Letsike Warns of Threats to Democracy

At an IDAHOBIT event hosted by The Other Foundation and UNAIDS in Johannesburg, South Africa’s Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, cautioned against the rise of organised anti-gender and anti-rights movements across Africa. She rejected claims that LGBTIQ+ identities are “un-African” and linked such narratives to colonial legacies and well-funded contemporary political strategies aimed at restricting civic space. Letsike also emphasised that democracy must be measured by whether vulnerable communities can safely and fully participate in society.

Fears Pretoria Guest House Murder May Be Linked to Grindr Gang

A Pretoria murder case intensified concerns about so-called “Grindr gang” attacks after four men were arrested in connection with the death of emergency medical services worker Braam Krüger. His body was found tied up at a Brooklyn guest house on 2 April following an alleged robbery and assault. Reports indicated that Krüger may have been lured to the location via the Grindr dating app. A petition called for stricter bail decisions and urged anyone with information or similar experiences to come forward amid fears that the incident could form part of a broader criminal syndicate targeting LGBTIQ+ men through dating platforms.

Khumbulani Pride Remembers Victims of Queer Hate

Khumbulani Pride was held in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, where activists and community members marched under the banner of remembrance and justice for victims of anti-LGBTIQ+ violence. Organised by Free Gender, the event saw participants wave rainbow flags, share messages of resistance, and honour multiple victims of past queer killings in the area during a candlelight ceremony. The gathering highlighted ongoing concerns about persistent violence in township communities while calling for accountability and justice.
