CLERIC: EXILE GAYS TO ISLAND

Advertorial

One of Uganda’s leading Muslim clerics has recommended that gays and lesbians be exiled on an island.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday at the Old Kampala Mosque, Sheikh Ramathan Shaban Mubajje told journalists that he had recommended the move to the country’s president.

He said that, “I asked President Museveni to get us an island on Lake Victoria and we take these homosexuals and they die out there.”

“If they die there then we shall have no more homosexuals in the country,” he added.

According to reports, others who took part in the meeting said that the president did not comment on Mubajje’s suggestion.

Mubajje explained that, “Homosexuality led to the destruction of the whole generation of Prophet Lut and such behaviours could be devastating to our generation as well. We join other religions in the fight against homosexuality.”

While LGBT activists recently undertook a campaign to lobby for tolerance in Uganda, a youth group, part of the Muslim Tabliq sect, announced that it would set up an ‘Anti-Gay Squad.’

Tabliq’s Sheikh Multah Bukenya said that, “We are ready to act swiftly and form this squad that will wipe out all abnormal practices like homosexuality in our society.” It is not clear exactly how the squad intends to accomplish this.

Homosexuality remains illegal in Uganda, with those found guilty facing life imprisonment.
