It’s been revealed that a straight character in the popular television vampire series will have a gay affair in the show’s new season.

According to Michael Ausiello from tvline.com, “a major character, heretofore heterosexual, will be involved in a same-sex romance” in the anticipated fourth season of True Blood, premiering on 26 June in the US.

Ausiello said that he can’t reveal any more “so as not to risk getting fanged by series creator Alan Ball”.

The columnist wrote that he has seen the big reveal and that it doesn’t feel gimmicky.

“In fact, after the initial shock wears off, I imagine you will do what I did and go, ‘Yeah. Makes total sense.'”

True Blood is already considered to be one of the most gay-friendly drama series on US television, with a number of gay or bisexual characters.

Two of the show’s cast, Anna Paquin and Evan Rachel Wood, have come out as bisexual and Ball is also openly-gay.

In March, the show received the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Award for “Outstanding Drama Series”. The award was accepted at the New York ceremony by openly-gay actor Denis O’Hare, who played the Vampire King Russell Edgington.
