It’s been confirmed that sexy English actor Tom hardy will be playing Elton John in the gay music legend’s highly anticipated big screen biopic.

Hardy will star in the film, titled Rocketman, which is described as “a larger-than-life movie musical spectacle” that will depict John’s rise from child prodigy to superstar.

The singer is working with producers on the film and will re-record many of his hits to be used in the movie.

“Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life,” said Rocket Pictures CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw. “We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board…”

Schlessel added: “Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material. We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton.”

The 36-year-old Hardy is best known for his roles in films like The Dark Knight Rises and Inception. In RocknRolla he played gay gangster Handsome Bob.

Hardy is no stranger to controversy about his own sexuality. In 2008 he told Now Magazine that he had affairs with other men when he was younger.

“Of course I have. I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me,” he was quoted as saying.

He went on to add: “I’m done experimenting but there’s plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine.”

In a 2010 interview with Marie-Claire UK, he appeared to backtrack on his earlier comments: “I don’t regret anything I’ve ever said. It’s just a shame things are misconstrued and I don’t get the opportunity to explain.’”

When asked if this referred to when he’d said he enjoyed relationships with men in his twenties, he replied: “I have never put my penis in a man. I’ve never had a cock in my arse, and I have no fucking desire for it. If that’s what you like, cool. But it doesn’t do it for me.”

Commentators suggested that due to his growing profile in Hollywood Hardy was under pressure to downplay his past experiences.

The actor will also be able to relate to the pop icon’s battle with substance abuse; he himself struggled with alcoholism and a crack cocaine addiction in his early-to-mid-20s.

Hardy will next be seen in Mad Max: Fury Road with Charlize Theron. Rocketman is set to go into production in Spring 2014.
