A passenger who confronted the governor of Texas at JFK International Airport over his anti-gay views was stopped from getting on his flight.

While waiting for a return flight on Tuesday night to Austin after a visit to New York City, Governor Greg Abbott was approached by the unnamed 32-year-old man, who shook his hand.

He then shouted at Abbott, “I hope you fucking go to hell because of your stance on gay marriage,” and, as he walked away, “I’m going to see you on the plane.”

According to The Dallas Morning News, the man was barred from getting on the flight, and only flew the next morning.

Abbott has been a vocal critic of the recent Supreme Court decision legalising same-sex marriage across the US.

After the historic June 26 ruling, he accused the court of having “abandoned its role as an impartial judicial arbiter” and said it “has become an unelected nine-member legislature.”

“As I have done in the past, I will continue to defend the religious liberties of all Texans — including those whose conscience dictates that marriage is only the union of one man and one woman,” he said.
