Meet Canada’s gorgeous new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, who doesn’t just sport model good looks but is also a vocal supporter of LGBT equality.

On Monday, Trudeau became the prime minister-designate of Canada after his Liberal Party beat out the Conservatives in an unexpected victory in the polls to take the majority of seats in parliament.

“I want to say this to this country’s friends around the world: Many of you have worried that Canada has lost its compassionate and constructive voice in the world over the past 10 years,” he commented, after winning the election.

“Well, I have a simple message for you on behalf of 35 million Canadians. We’re back.”

The 43-year-old has actively campaigned for LGBT equality throughout his political career, including promising to end the country’s ban on gay blood and organ donors.

Trudeau’s also expressed support for adding gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act and hate crimes law and has pledged to appoint more LGBT people to government.

Despite being Catholic, he supports marriage equality and the right to abortion.

“As someone who was raised Roman Catholic, and who attended a Jesuit school, I understand that it is difficult for people of deep faith to set their beliefs aside in order to serve Canadians who may not share those beliefs,” he wrote in his 2014 memoir. “But for me, this is what liberalism is all about. It is the idea that private belief, while it ought to be valued and respected, is fundamentally different from public duty.”

Notably, Trudeau is also the first Canadian prime minister to have marched in LGBT Pride parades.

The son of former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, he is married to Sophie Grégoire. The couple have three children.
