With limited resources and almost no support from advertisers, LGBTI media outlets in South Africa have struggled to produce and employ journalists in the field.
Now, the Mail & Guardian newspaper, together with The Other Foundation, has announced a journalism fellowship focusing on LGBTI and related issues.
The “Rainbow Fellowship” will be awarded to a mid-level LGBTI journalist for one year, from March 1 2016 to February 28 2017. The successful applicant will receive remuneration of R25,000 a month (cost to company).
Amongst other responsibilities, the journalist will write two to three strong stories a month for the newspaper, create daily content for the M&G digital platforms, liaise with activists and other stakeholders in the LGBTI community and remain up to date on relevant issues.
Applicants must have a degree in journalism or similar qualification, knowledge of media law and ethics as well as first-class English language skills and experience at a national news publication.
The deadline for applications is January 31 2016. For more details click here.
