The president of Mr Gay World and the South African organisers of the event have again opted to postpone the competition from March 2021 until 18 to 26 September 2021.

They said the decision was taken due to the ongoing global spikes in Covid-19 cases, continued global travel restrictions and the implementation of social distancing restrictions.

The 2020 event, which was set to take place in South Africa early next year together with the 2021 edition, had already been delayed due to the same reasons.

“We take our responsibility towards the health and safety of the delegates and all those involved with the event, including spectators, very seriously,” explained Eric Butter, president and founder of Mr Gay World. “This is a global event and we must wait until regulations allow delegates from all countries to travel abroad.”

“We remind everyone concerned that both Mr Gay World 2020 and Mr Gay World 2021 will be crowned at the same event in 2021,” he continued. “The winners of both competitions will share the stage and will reign together as Mr Gay World 2020 and Mr Gay World 2021 until the next Mr Gay World competition takes place in 2022.”

Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Mr Gay World, Dr Igor Scheurkogel, commented that they were looking forward to showcasing South Africa to the world during the week-long event. “Heritage Day takes place on Friday 24 September 2021, and we are excited to share our beautiful country’s cultural heritage with the world.”

“South Africa is my second home,” added Butter, who is based in Sydney, Australia. “And we can’t wait to come back either. We miss the country’s formidable people who always make us feel welcome. We know that postponing these events is a disappointment to many, but the decision was not taken lightly. We look forward to hosting them both next year and will make sure to make it worth your wait.”

The annual Mr. Gay World competition aims to find an ambassador for the international LGBTQ+ community from a diverse range of delegates who represent the spirit of their nation and embody qualities such as confidence, self-assurance, charisma and natural leadership.
