Nelson Mandela Bay Pride 2023: Visible and Proud

Advertorial

The annual Nelson Mandela Bay Pride festivities are taking place on Saturday, 28 October 2023, at Donkin Reserve in Gqeberha.

“Frantic administration and planning did not prevent this year’s Pride Committee from making some important changes to their structure,” says Martin Smith, Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Pride Executive Director.

“Change brings new ideas, new energy, boosting committee morale, and should not be seen as negative. These changes will ensure that Nelson Mandela Bay Pride 2023 will be an experience not to be missed,” he adds.

The 2023 event will kick off at City Hall at 10:30, where there will be a short address by the Mayor, followed by the Pride Parade at 11:00, from City Hall to Donkin Reserve.

The parade is estimated to arrive at the reserve at approximately noon, where there will be music, performers and stalls.

On-stage activities will include guest speakers, DJs, vocalists and performers, including Amagemshana and Smashy Wodumo, as well as the crowning of the first ever two Nelson Mandela Bay Pride MX Ambassadors. The entertainment runs up till 17:00.

The celebration will continue at the official after-party, which will be the grand opening of a new LGBTIQ+ safe space.

The Community is a nightclub being opened by owners Lelethu Guntu and Lindsay Bevin Africa. “It is a haven for all of us who unite under our rainbow flag, giving us a place to truly be loud and proud in our unique style,” says Smith.

The after-party doors open at 17:00 and the venue will screen the Rugby World Cup final on the deck.

While there are no costs to participate in the daytime Pride events, pre-sale tickets at R50 for the Community Club after-party can be purchased by contacting 065 935 8648.

Entry at the door on the night is priced at R70 or R90 after 20:00.
