Snoop Dogg “Scared” by Same-Sex Love in Kids’ Movie

Rapper Snoop Dogg has criticised LGBTQ+ representation in children’s movies, admitting that he did not know how to explain a loving same-sex couple to a child.

In a recent appearance on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop spoke about watching the 2022 animated film Lightyear with his grandson. The film features a same-sex female couple with a child.

“Why my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman? She a woman,'” he told the host.

The American entertainer admitted that the question left him stumped and unable to explain the concept of same-sex love or diverse families to his grandson.

“Oh shit, I didn’t come in for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie. Hey man, watch the movie. They just said she and she had a baby. They both women. How does she have a baby?”

He added: “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.

“It threw me for a loop. I’m like, what part of the movie was this? These are kids that we have to show that at this age? Like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer.”

Echoing Right-Wing Rhetoric

Snoop’s discomfort at seeing benign, loving same-sex relationships in children’s entertainment echoes right-wing outrage that falsely frames such representation as “sexualising” or “grooming” children. Yet this reasoning is never applied to portrayals of opposite-sex couples in similar contexts.

His remarks drew strong criticism on social media, including from pop icon Boy George, who posted:

“So sad to read this from @SnoopDogg because you can’t turn kids gay by helping them understand that some people are different. You are born gay, just like you are born black or anything else. Kids are a reflection of those who raise them. Come on Snoop, be the legend you are or get some stronger weed!”

A Familiar Controversy

This is not the first time entertainers have faced backlash over LGBTQ+ visibility in children’s media.

In 2023, South African singer Steve Hofmeyr settled an Equality Court case and apologised to the LGBTQ+ community after his homophobic 2022 rant about queer representation in Disney content.

He claimed that including LGBTQ+ characters in children’s entertainment would lead to kids being “taught how to have sex with mice, ducks and dogs” and argued that “the ‘+’ at the end of the LGBTQ; that includes those kinds of relationships with animals.”
