World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Superstar Darren Young has come out as one of the first openly gay WWE wrestlers during an impromptu interview.

The 33-year-old American had just arrived at the airport in Los Angeles on Wednesday and was collecting his luggage when he was approached by a TMZ videographer.

Young (real name Fredrick Douglas Rosser) was asked if he believed that a gay wrester could be successful within the WWE camp.

He replied with a laugh: “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE Superstar and, to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay, and I’m happy. Very happy.”

“I’m flabbergasted,” said the surprised videographer, adding “I commend your bravery”.

Young went on to say: “Some people might not like it, some people will like it but I’m here to please myself. I’m here to be happy and it’s very important that I’m happy with myself.

“I’m hoping to be able to make a difference, you know? It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter. It should be about the person,” he said.

WWE quickly issued a statement in support of Young.

“WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar,” said the organisation.

“Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation,” WWE added.

Young’s coming out was greeted by a flood of congratulatory messages from fellow wrestlers.

Curt Hawkins wrote: “Wow! @DarrenYoungWWE is fearless. This is a historic day for the sport of professional wrestling. Good for you D-Young!”

Chavo Guerrero jr. tweeted: “Huge support for @DarrenYoungWWE !! Great guy & great wrestler!”
