The director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens says he expects LGBT characters to finally make their presence felt in one of the upcoming Star Wars movies.

According to the Daily Beast, JJ Abrams was asked at the US-Ireland Alliance’s annual Oscar Wilde Awards last week Thursday about the hit film series including a gay character.

“Of course!” he replied. “When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”

Abrams, who is the Executive Producer of Star Wars: Episode VIII, due out next year, said: “I would love it. To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

There’s been much speculation about more than just a bromance brewing between the characters of Finn (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) who appeared to form a strong bond in The Force Awakens.

Both actors have teased fans about the possibility of a gay romance, with Isaac stating, “I think it’s very subtle romance that’s happening,” and Boyega adding, “Who knows?”

While there’ve  been a handful of LGBT characters included in Star Wars spin-off books and games, the rainbow community has yet to see itself represented in any of the franchise’s seven big screen outings thus far.

Abrams has previously been praised for featuring a woman and a black man as lead characters n the The Force Awakens, a film that’s earned around two billion dollars at the box office.
