Hunky music star Ricky Martin has broken up with his partner of almost six years, Carlos Gonzalez Abella.
Martin’s representative has confirmed the news, stating that “Ricky and Carlos have mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be united by friendship and their shared experiences”.
Although Martin (42) has not directly addressed the breakup, he tweeted in late December: “Just because the lesson comes from someone you love, does not mean it is correct” and later “Changes oh changes.”
The couple has been raising Martin’s five-year-old twins, Matteo and Valentino, who were born via a surrogate mother.
Although they had been dating since 2008, the singer only first acknowledged Abella in 2011 when he thanked him after receiving an award at the GLAAD Media Awards. It is believed that the two were introduced by mutual friends.
In 2012, Martin, Abell and the children were photographed as a family for Vanity Fair.
He told the magazine: “I have experienced wonderful things with my partner. Complexity, understanding, and, at the same time, freedom, not being afraid that your partner is judging you. That is what I have found with Carlos.”
People magazine reported that a source in November claimed that the couple was on the verge of splitting. “They’ve spent very little time together and have grown apart. They’ve been on the outs for a while now,” the source said.
