American boxing legend Evander Holyfield has outraged TV viewers by making anti-gay comments during his stint on Celebrity Big Brother.

Holyfield, who is taking part in the reality show in the UK, got into a discussion on homosexuality on Sunday with fellow housemate Luisa Zissman when she asked if there were openly gay boxers.

The 51-year-old retired boxer stated that homosexuality “ain’t normal” and compared being gay to having a handicap.

“If you were born and your leg were turned this way – what would you do? You go to the doctor and get it fixed back right?” Holyfield said.

He also went on to insist that homosexuality “is a choice.”

Boy George tweeted his disappointment at the former sportsman’s views: “Shame, I had such admiration for Mr Evander Holyfield, he seemed dignified and I was sure he was a cool, smart, giant!”

The pop star added: “At customs there should be a huge sign! Welcome to Britain, racism, sexism, homophobia and bad hair are not tolerated!”

Holyfield was called into the Diary Room and told that his comments were not acceptable. He responded that he understood that he might have offended some viewers with his opinions but did not apologise for what he said.

There have since been calls for Holyfield to be thrown out of the show.
