GAY SWEDISH FOOTBALL HUNK SIGNS WITH US TEAM
Swedish football player Anton Hysén, who came out as gay in 2011, has been signed to play for an American football team.
Outsports.com reported that the Myrtle Beach Mutiny team, based in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, announced the news of Hysén’s signing on Thursday.
“I am excited to be joining the Mutiny this season,” said the 23-year-old in a statement. “This is a great opportunity for me on a personal and professional level. I hope I can help take the team to the top of the NPSL (National Premier Soccer League).”
“The Mutiny are very excited to have Anton joining us this year,” said Pat Piscitelli, sporting director for the Mutiny. “A player of his caliber, with his international experience, will bring a positive change to the Mutiny. The Myrtle Beach area is in for a real treat with this team and will have the opportunity to see professional soccer played at a very high level.”
Hysén, who is the son of high-profile Swedish football manager and former player Glenn Ingvar Anton Hysén, told Offside magazine in 2011: “I am a footballer. And gay.”
Although he played for a minor side in Sweden he was described as being only the second professional footballer to come out. The first was the UK’s Justin Fashanu in 1990, who later committed suicide.
Hysén joins Robbie Rogers, who plays for Los Angeles Galaxy, as one of two openly gay professional footballers playing the sport in the US.
