Watch: Is this TV’s youngest gay kiss?

Advertorial

youngest_gay_kiss_the_fostersUS family drama series The Fosters has screened a kiss between a 15-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy.

It’s believed to be the youngest gay kiss shown on American television.

This moment of tentative teen love won’t come as too much of a surprise for fans of the show.

Connor (Gavin MacIntosh, 15) previously supported Jude (Hayden Byerly, 14) when he was bullied in school. The two have also shared fleeting exchanges in a tent on a camping trip and in a cinema.

In the new scene, Jude expresses his confusion about Connor’s mixed signals and their growing attraction and flirtations – which leads to the kiss.

Speaking to Just Jared, MacIntosh said that he believes that the storyline is a very important one to share.

“It’s been eye opening about how many kids struggle with feeling ‘OK’ about questioning their sexuality. Teen suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people age 10 – 20, and LGB youth are 4x more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers,” he said.

“So yes, this plot is pivotal. Just being 13 is difficult enough, going through physical and emotional changes, then if you add in not being sure about if you like boys or girls, and society telling you that you should be a certain way – I can see why so many kids are struggling. Boy/girl crushes at 13 are portrayed a lot on TV, but to represent something different – I am proud of that.”

Running since 2013, The Fosters is about a lesbian couple who are raising a mixed-race family of biological and foster kids. It won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series (2013) and was renewed for a third season in January.
