A member of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature has lashed out at recommendations to provide education about homosexuality in schools.

The Cape Argus reported that African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) MPL Ferlon Christians last week rejected a call by the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (Sweat) to include information about same-sex sexual orientation in high schools.

Christians told the legislature that the ACDP condemned the idea as “nauseating”. He demanded that the Western Cape government not condone “sin” and instead work to “discourage” pupils so that they do not “engage in homosexual sex”.

Christians insisted that sex was only intended by God for procreation and said that the ACDP’s position is that the Bible makes clear that “homosexuality is a sin before God”.

He also quoted from the book of Corinthians that the “sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who have sex with men, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God”.

Sweat’s Psychosocial Manager, Dr Gordon Isaacs, responded that the organisation’s recommendation was intended to improve education about human sexuality and sexual health in schools.

“To believe that speaking about gay sex, especially as it unfolds during adolescence, is taboo and ‘dirty’, attests to the naiveté and even fear of those who believe it should not be spoken about,” he said.

The ANC also commented that Christians should keep “his prejudice for his home and church.”

Party Spokesperson Cobus Grobler added: “The legislature is hardly a place where he can preach, read scriptures and criticise on this topic as he took an oath to uphold the Constitution which is liberal, tolerant and not discriminatory.”

The ACDP is known for its anti-gay views, and recently supported UCT’s suspended SRC Vice-President, Zizipho Pae, who described the US Supreme Court’s decision to legalise same-sex marriage as “institutionalising and normalising sin”.

The party previously blocked LGBT-affirming motions in Parliament; one congratulating South Africa’s Francois Nel for winning Mr Gay World in 2011 and another in May in support of the country hosting Mr Gay World and condemning homophobia.

The ACDP also voted against the passage of the Civil Union Bill that legalised same-sex marriage in 2006.
